I bought one of the original Apple TVs, and I wasn’t too impressed. I don’t quite remember what hard-drive size it has but I think I paid ~£300 for it. Quite a drop in price with the new version launching at £99!
At first I adored it, well that’s not quite true. After a lot of swearing and cursing and hair pulling I had it patched, and then I loved it. But it was so difficult to transfer files onto. sFTP transfer over Wifi was so fucking slow I would have to crawl around behind the TV so I could plug in an Ethernet cable. That sucked. I couldn’t run wTorrent directly on the ATV as it was so under-powered. Oh and good luck getting the (factory disabled) USB port to work so you can use an external drive!
So does this mean I’m not getting the new Apple TV? Err, well no. I’m actually really tempted, the idea of streaming everything suits me. But it hinges on one thing, what formats will it stream? I don’t want to convert all my video files to some Apple format to stream them from my Notebook.
Here’s hoping it’s the VLC of streaming boxes!
